Para cress, also known as “electric plant”, is a herbaceous plant native to South America. It is best known for its anesthetic properties and unique taste, which causes a tingling or numbing sensation in the mouth. This is due to an active compound called spilanthol, contained in its leaves and flowers.
Para cress is a low-growing plant, generally reaching 15 to 30 cm in height. Its flowers are small, yellow with a red heart, in the shape of a cone, which gives them a characteristic appearance. It is used in cooking to add a surprisingly spicy touch to dishes.
