Origin and History
The sunflower is an annual plant native to North America, where it played an important role in the diet. It was introduced to Europe in the 16th century.
Sowing and Planting
Sow the seeds in seedling pots from early April to mid-May at a depth of 1 cm. The optimal germination temperature is between 15°C and 25°C. From mid-May, plant the seedlings in the open ground, spacing them 30 to 50 cm apart. Sunflowers appreciate sunny locations and grow in all types of soil.
Ongoing Maintenance and Harvest
The sunflower is an easy plant to grow. After planting, it is necessary to protect it from slugs until it is well established. Staking is also beneficial so that the stems do not break under their own weight. Sunflower seeds can be harvested and dried when the heads begin to yellow.
