Beautiful rheum with large red stalks, delicious when cooked.
This perennial plant likes sunny locations and nutrient-rich soil.
Sowing can begin indoors as early as March and continue through April, or alternatively from August to September.
The plant will overwinter in root form and sprout again the following year, reaching up to 1 meter in height.
During the first few years of growth, do not harvest the stalks in order to allow the plant to establish itself.
Harvest begins in April and ends in June. After that, the plant accumulates too much oxalic acid in the stalks, which can be harmful to health in large amounts. Additionally, the plant needs to store up nutrients to survive the winter.
When harvesting, only take a few stalks at a time per plant to avoid exhausting it. Removing the flower stalks throughout the season encourages leaf growth and can prolong the harvest.
