Rye is often used as a green manure and called green-cut rye. It is very undemanding due to low water and warmth requirements. Rye loosens up dense soil due to its deep roots and is considered an ideal rotation crop. The nutritional content of this rye are in perfect proportions to make high quality flour for breadmaking.
Sow in late September to late October by broadcasting onto already-harvested garden beds. In the spring, before soil tillage, mow down and till, or leave as a bread grain.
